Virginia Metalcrafters Tarrow Leaf Brass Dish, Oskar Hansen Design, 1940s
Some of the best design has always come straight from nature, and this brass dish is a perfect example. Sculptor Oskar Hansen modeled it after the Tarrow leaf for Virginia Metalcrafters in the 1940s, translating a living shape into cast metal that you can hold in your hand. Three little feet let it sit lightly, as if the leaf just landed on your table.
I'm always drawn to pieces inspired by the natural world, and this one brings the outdoors in with a beautiful touch. Virginia Metalcrafters was known for tasteful, well-made brass goods that have lasted for decades, which is why collectors still seek them out. This one has a partial embossed maker's mark on the bottom and a warm patina that only comes with age. It's a lovely home for rings, keys, a bar of soap, or nothing at all.
